CCW Class Frequently Asked Questions

Need some more information before signing up for your CCW class? Already enrolled but not sure what to expect? Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get from our students.

Yes. Our CCW classes meet Colorado’s requirement for firearms training to apply for your permit.

We recommend bringing something to take notes with, a water bottle, a snack, a valid ID, and a personal firearm if you own one. If you need to rent a firearm, just let us know in advance, and we’ll help you arrange it.

Yes. Under Colorado’s updated law effective July 1st, 2025, live-fire training is now required for all CCW classes. At Colorado Handgun Safety, you’ll complete a live-fire exercise at the range to demonstrate your firearm proficiency as part of the course.

Our classes cost only $79! For more information on what you’ll learn, visit our CCW classes to read more.

CCW classes at Colorado Handgun Safety are eight hours long. You’ll learn a ton of fantastic information from an engaging instructor who will make your class fun and fast.

When you go to apply for your permit, your Certificate of Completion must be dated one year of application appointment date. That means if you’re not ready to get your permit now, you have some time to decide when it’s a good time.

After you pass your CCW class, you’ll receive a certificate of completion. This certificate will show as proof that you attended a firearms safety class when you go to apply for your permit.

You’ll apply with your county’s sheriff’s office by submitting an application either online or in person.

The cost of your CCW application depends on your county and whether you’re renewing. On average, it’s about $100-150 to apply for the first time.

For example, if you’re applying for your CCW in Denver County, you’ll pay a $152.50 fee that covers your background check and processing. There may be some other costs for things like a temporary permit and fingerprints, too.

If you’re renewing, it’s a lot cheaper. In Denver County, you’ll pay a $63.00 renewal fee.

The state of Colorado says they will let you know within 90 days of submitting your application.

Yes. Colorado law now requires both a written test and a live-fire proficiency test for your CCW permit. You must pass a written exam with a minimum score of 80% and demonstrate accuracy by hitting 35 out of 50 rounds fired during the live-fire exercise.

Your CCW is good for five years. If you decide to renew, you must do so within 120 days of the expiration date.

Anyone can take a CCW class! Whether you’re a total beginner or have been in the military for decades, our classes are inviting, and our instructors can’t wait to meet you!

Keep in mind that Colorado requires you to be at least 21 years old to apply for your permit.

While we encourage everyone to take a class to stay up to date on their skills and state laws, you do not need to take a CCW class to apply for your permit if you’re military or recently out of the military.

If you are active duty military or have proof of honorable discharge within three years of submitting an application, you do not have to take a firearms safety training class to obtain your permit.
