Hear From Colorado Handgun Safety Students
See what Coloradans are saying about their experience with Colorado Handgun Safety.
You’ve probably heard there are changes to Colorado’s carry permits and training requirements. Starting July 1, 2025, Colorado law HB24-1174 will require all CCW renewal applicants to complete a refresher course to ensure continued competency with a handgun.
Under the old law, applicants only needed to submit a renewal form. With the new law, you must take a CCW refresher class. If your permit expiration is coming up, it’s essential to prepare in advance, so you don’t run into any issues during the renewal process. Here is what you need to know about your concealed carry renewal:
Join the tens of thousands of Coloradans who’ve relied on us for the expert training needed to renew their concealed carry permits. Our NRA-certified instructors make sure you’re fully prepared for the latest requirements and give you the knowledge to carry safely, legally, and with confidence.
Hi, I’m Bill Peterson, owner and operator of Colorado Handgun Safety. I’ve been a handgun safety instructor for over 20 years. As a certified instructor approved by the state of Colorado, I ensure every class is designed to meet the new requirements and give you practical skills that go beyond just passing the exam.
You’ll receive hands-on, in-person instruction in a small class setting that focuses on the legal aspects and real-world scenarios of having your CCW permit. My mission is simple: I’m committed to helping you stay confident, safe, and prepared around firearms.
Your class will be split into a lecture portion and a live-fire portion. You’ll need to bring a valid ID and your firearm. If you need to rent a firearm, just let us know in advance, and we’ll help you arrange it. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Eye and ear protection are required for the shooting portion — if you don’t have your own, we can coordinate options for you.
If you have any questions before your class, reach out to one of our instructors. We’re here to ensure you have everything you need for a smooth and safe experience.
Our renewal class costs $. This includes your concealed carry class, ammo for the live-fire portion, and your exams.
Yes. If you don’t have a firearm to use, we will coordinate with you at the shooting range to ensure you’re able to borrow one for the live-fire portion of the class.
Colorado law requires students to shoot at least 50 rounds of ammunition during the live-fire portion of their refresher class.
It depends. You have a 6-month grace period to renew your expired permit. If your application is received after the grace period, you will need to apply for a brand new permit.
Each CCW refresher course is 2 hours long. One half is lecture-style and the other will include live-fire.
If you fail the live-fire or written exam, you will need to retake the CCW renewal course to demonstrate you have met the required standards.
We’ll work with you to identify areas for improvement, and you can reschedule another class at your convenience. Our goal is to make sure you’re fully prepared and confident to carry responsibly.
As long as your Colorado handgun permit is not expired, you are able to concealed carry while you’re going through the renewal process.
You can submit your renewal application to your county sheriff’s office up to 120 days before your permit expires. Be sure to complete your CCW renewal class before submitting your application, as the certificate of completion must be dated within 6 months of your submission date.
After you successfully complete the class and pass both the live-fire and written exams, you’ll receive a certificate of completion. This certificate is required to submit your renewal application to your county sheriff’s office. You can then apply for your renewal, following the steps outlined by your local sheriff.
Once your application is processed and approved, you’ll receive your renewed CCW permit, allowing you to continue carrying legally and confidently.
